History
As far as online leagues go, the Orca-Cola Championship was and still is a force to be reckoned with for fans of Blood Bowl.
Even before the Cyanide version of the game came out in the summer of 2009, the community on its forums grew larger by the day. Its significant fanbase was eagerly awaiting the release of their beloved game in what was already a very active online community. As is the case for the vast majority of game releases, players started to enjoy their first Blood Bowl matches with the beta version of the game. In order to enjoy their testing experience to the fullest, many Blood Bowl enthusiasts created private leagues, allowing them to share their passion for the game with their fellow coaches. One of these people was Zephire, the Founder and original Director of the OCC.
Among the many private leagues that were created with the beta version of the game, the OCC was by far the largest. In fact, it was so successful that the league was officially founded before the actual version of the game came out, and its rapidly-growing community awaited the release of the game with anticipation.
In July of 2009, the Orca-Cola Championship officially came to life. Zephire, along with the help of some other people from the early OCC community (RayXXX, one of the current Directors, was among them), founded the league and Season 1 was officially underway on July 8th, 2009. Among its first crew of admins were current Directors Doomy and Pidpad, who still are very active figures in today's OCC.
The current 9-game format and promotion/relegation system did not exist back in the early seasons, and admins worked alone on individual divisions rather than together on whole tiers. After a couple experimental seasons, the OCC board settled on the season format and league structure that we enjoy today. The addition of Blood Bowl Manager for statistic purposes came at the start of season 4, which may explain why some of the earlier statistics or records are harder to come by!
At its peak, the OCC was sporting 290 coaches among 29 divisions (tiers 2-8 and the ten Division 1 coaches).
Today, more than 11 seasons after its creation, the OCC is still going strong with more than 200 coaches who enjoy the game together on a daily basis...and it is not showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon!
The OCC Division 1 Championship
The OCC Division 1 Championship is what every single Orca-Cola coach sheds blood, sweat and tears for. Awarded to the Division 1 winner at the end of every season, this title not only gives its winner gigantic bragging rights, but also confirms that the ones who are fortunate enough to write their names on the hardware gave everything they had and rightfully collect the spoils and the respect of their fellow coaches.
A brief study on the OCC Division 1 Championship reveals that its history is one of eras, and also clearly favors the classic Blood Bowl races over the "Legendary Era" ones, which appeared between seasons 6 and 7. However, with the recent emergence of Legendary teams in higher tiers, this may change sooner rather than later.
The earliest OCC records show that coach Enarion's Saviours of Athel Loren, one of the few Season 1 teams that are still active today, largely dominated the early seasons of the OCC by winning its first two championships. Seasons 3 and 4 saw new faces on top as General Kale's Bustid Nukklez and Stygger's M.A.D. won seasons 3 and 4 respectively. The OCC faithful likely thought that the Wood Elf era was over by then, and that it was simply too hard to repeat the feat that Enarion had accomplished in the early days : winning back-to-back OCC Championships.
They were wrong.
Seasons 5 to 9 saw the complete and utter dominance of another Wood Elf team, coach Flix's mighty Loren Wolves. With uncanny ball-handling plays, unmatched tactics and a little help from the Blood Bowl God Nuffle, Flix achieved the impossible by winning five straight OCC Division 1 Championships in dominant fashion. By that point, everybody thought that Flix would keep dominating until the Loren Wolves retired from the OCC. But that was until another coach, who had been waiting on the outside for his opportunity to pounce, had something to say about it.
Coach Tigga's Lee's Lizards, who had been lurking around Division 1 for a while (winning the runner-up title in Season 7), took Season 10 by storm with an impressive, near-flawless record to win their first OCC Championship with flying colors. Devastated, the Loren Wolves ventured back into the Old World's lush forests, where they are likely planning their next move. Since that day, nobody knows what happened to the Wolves. Will they be back in the OCC someday? Only time will tell.
But Tigga did not stop there. High on momentum after breaking Flix's dynasty, he also won Season 11 in dominant fashion. Are we witnessing the sprouts of a new OCC dynasty? Season 12 holds all the answers. You'll be glad you tuned in, folks!
